Here’s our latest installment in the Garden Book, a multi-media, interactive, outreach project meeting with small-scale growers in the Yell and Pope Counties. Our goal isn’t just to document these stories, but rather to help support and encourage a growing conversation about food security and sustainability in the region. This project has been supported by the Pope County Community Foundation and is the effort of multiple volunteers. Read more here.

A few months ago we discussed meeting with grandfather and grandson team, Whitney Wills and Bryan Mader. You can read that post/column here as well as see photos Bryan took of last year’s garden. We recently produced a short radio piece from our visit with Mader and Wills, which aired on the Ozarks at Large program on KUAF 91.3 F.M. this past week. In the near future Saira will be going out to take photos of their spring 2013 garden, which will not doubt be beautiful.

One of our core goals at the McElroy House is to engage in participatory research and information sharing. So as we build the content of the garden book we share this information with the community from which it came, making it useful through newspaper articles, radio programs, blog entries and community speaking engagements. If you’d like to support the work of the garden book, including donating money toward printing costs of the final project, please contact us at the contact link above! We’d be most appreciative!
